How to have a less stressful holiday season

Updated: Aug 8

The holiday season can be great fun but it can also be stressful with huge demands on our time. The holiday season should give you time to relax and reconnect with the people who are truly important. Here are some tips to make the holiday season more fun and less stressful.

Stressed Woman Pause for Counselling Aberdeen

1. Plan Ahead

  • Create a checklist of tasks and prioritise them.

2. Set Realistic Expectations

  • Understand that not everything has to be perfect - no one has the perfect holiday season, no matter how many influencers claim to have accomplished it.

  • Be realistic about what you can accomplish and what you can't.

3. Budget Wisely

  • Set a budget for gifts, decorations, and food.

  • Stick to the budget to avoid financial stress.

4. Simplify Decorations

  • Decorate selectively. You don't need to transform your entire home.

  • Consider using fewer decorations or opting for minimalist décor - less time spent on decorations means more time for you and the people who mean the most.

5. Gift-Giving

  • Consider alternatives like Secret Santa or drawing names to reduce the number of gifts - try setting a limit to the spend of each gift and get relatives to do the same.

  • Focus on thoughtful and meaningful gifts rather than expensive ones - could you make something rather than spend more money.

6. Delegate Tasks

  • Share responsibilities with family members or friends.

  • You don't have to do everything on your own - if the family is coming around for diner, could they each bring 1 item.

7. Take Breaks

  • Make time for yourself. Take short breaks to relax and recharge. Even if it is just sitting down with a cup of tea for 5 minutes.

  • Practice self-care activities to reduce stress.

8. Say No and Establish Boundaries

  • It's okay to decline invitations or additional responsibilities if you're feeling overwhelmed. You don't need to go to every party.

  • Prioritise activities that bring you joy and align with your values.

9. Online Shopping

  • Consider doing your shopping online to save time and avoid crowds.

10. Focus on the Meaning

  • What is the meaning of the holiday season for you? Make the holiday season about what you feel is important not what others think.

  • Spend quality time with loved ones and focus on creating memories.

11. Healthy Habits

  • Prioritise your health by getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and eating well.

  • Consider incorporating stress-reducing activities like meditation or yoga.

  • Monitor your stress levels and if you notice a negative change take action like reducing social commitments or seeking help from friends, family or a professional.

12. Learn to Let Go

  • Not everything will go as planned, and that's okay. Remember perfection does not exist, so why chase it.

  • Be flexible and adapt to changes without stressing too much.

13. Celebrate Virtually

  • If travel or large gatherings are stressful, consider virtual celebrations.

  • Connect with loved ones through video calls. Do you really need to travel all that way every year? You could visit 1 set of family 1 year in person and the rest virtually and then swap the next year.

14. Limit Social Media Use

  • Social media can amplify feelings of inadequacy or isolation. Limit your time on these platforms during the holidays. Be present with those people who are important, it is the greatest gift you can give.

  • Be mindful of comparisons and remember that people often share only the best versions of their lives.

15. Reflect and Express Gratitude

  • Take a moment to reflect on the positive aspects of the holiday season.

  • Express gratitude for the people and experiences in your life.

16. Seek Professional Help if Needed

  • If you struggle with mental health issues, consider seeking support from a mental health professional.

  • Many therapists offer virtual sessions if in-person visits are challenging.
