Depression
Depression can be defined as a low mood that can last for a number of months and can be recurring bouts that impact your daily life. There are many types of depression including Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD), Bipolar Disorder, Postpartum Depression (PPD), Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and Atypical Depression.
Depression is an illness and can cause physical symptoms like;

Anxiety can be defined as a feeling of stress which may cause panic or fear. Everybody experiences anxiety at some point. Anxiety can be cause an inability to carry out everyday tasks and there are many forms of anxiety, like Social Anxiety and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Trauma
Trauma can be defined as a destressing experience which can be a single event or reoccurring events. Trauma is different for everyone and the symptoms can be specific depending on the trauma and the person. There are different types of trauma;

Acute trauma: This results from a single stressful or dangerous event. Examples include a car accident or mugging.

Chronic trauma: This results from repeated and prolonged exposure to highly stressful events. Examples include cases of child abuse, bullying, or domestic violence.

Complex trauma: This results from exposure to multiple traumatic events. Examples include living in or military service in a war zone, being raised by narcissist parents, or chronic neglect as a child.
Physical symptoms of trauma include;

Hypervigilance - feeling no environment is safe

Flashbacks - reliving an event or events as if you were there

How counselling can help
Counselling for trauma needs to occur at a pace you set to maximise the effectiveness of the counselling due to the need to establish a feeling of safety that allows you to talk about your experiences. Counselling allows you to express the emotions about the events, which you may never have been able to do before. Being able to express the emotions helps you make sense of the events and take back control so that you can live the life you deserve.
